  • Original Series 3, stuck at Welcome screen

Last night my original series 3 spontaneously rebooted. The lights in the front panel lit, then went out as usual. But the DVR never appeared to get past the "Welcome" screen even after several minutes.

It appears that the most common Tivo problems are the disk drives and the power supplies, in approximately that order.

What I could not quite glean from reading the forum was whether a DVR "stuck" at the Welcome screen is indicative of a HD failure.

Wondering if someone could provide an opinion on that. If it's a HD problem then I'll just go buy another (bigger) drive and ship it off to WK to get a new image blown onto it. But if the problem is on the motherboard then I will probably not fix that.

    Thanks!

You are right about the most common problems, and being stuck at the "Welcome" screen almost always means you have a bad drive.
    Been here a long time . . .

Thanks Michael. I'll buy a new drive and send it off to you folks.

Forgot to ask: this DVR has a lifetime subscription. Is there a way to preserve that? It also has a pair of cable-cards, but I think I'm resigned to calling Comcast to get them to "hit" it once it's back up and running. (I have to do battle with them about 2-3 times a year anyway because they usually screw up the provisioning on one of our DVRs that often...)

Replacing a hard drive does not impact your lifetime TiVo service.
