  • HD XL and the Need to Delete the Deleted

awhile back, we bought a WK Tivo HD XL with an upgraded (1 TB) drive. All was well until we received 11.0j (or was it k?) software. Here is the approximate sequence of events:

    1) TIVO working fine.
    2) We notice that suggestions are not recording but we do get quite a lot in the suggestions list, even though none record.
3)We check our Pionerr 810H upstairs and plenty of suggestions record. On the XL, NOTHING.
    4) Then we get this message that we have not connected for guide updates and our guide data will run out on a certain date. This is a lie since all updates have completed successfuly and we already had guide data beyond the date mentioned. We REBOOT and the messages stop for about two weeks before coming back
    5) The menu noises stop. No bleeps or bloops, just silence. We try turning off the sounds, turning back on. Only a reboot helps this.
    6) Eventually, we no longer can download guide data as we get an S03 error at different places in the update process. We have good signal strength on Wireless G adapter.
    7) Reboots don't fix the S03 error but we read on Tivo that we may have TOO MUCH data and just need to unplug the WiFi and let it lie dormant for a few days and then we are back in business.

We have tested the hard drive through SMART tests and the HD is fine. No problems booting. Is the drive full? That is a possibility as Darlene like to record complete seasons of shows before watching them in sequence. Note: I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING EVER GET DELETED FOR LACK OF SPACE!! Ever! we have really old shows that are not do not delete and they are still there. Have never seen a show in the Recently Deleted ever get permanently deleted.

So, how do we fix this?

I stay up late and start in the Recently Deleted folder that usually has well over 150 shows in there. I start at the bottom and manually delete each and every show in this folder. Withing about 2 days, the TIVO returns back to normal.

Suspicion: someone may have hard-coded disk drive sizes somewhere in the software. (E.g., a Tivo HD XL is supposed to have a 250 GB hard drive, we are using 1 TB.) Since the percent of the drive use using the TB drive is really low, it doesn't go into cleanup mode. In the area of suggestions, they think we are tight on space so they stop recording the suggestions. But they never empty the trash< so to speak. Usually when deleted folder is > 300 shows, we have to watch for strange things happening even though the exact figure various by sizes of the shows and how much is usually in the non-deleted Now Showing areas.

Has anyone ever heard of this? We are on 11.0k right now.

Just to be clear, the stock size of a drive in a TiVo HD XL is, in fact, 1 TB.

That really all sounds like hard drive failure to me. Have you tried a kickstart 54?

      Tried Everything

Ran the kickstart many times and was able to run S.M.A.R.T tests without any problems. The TIVO HD XL I bought originally came with a 250 GB drive, if my memory doesn't fail me, but this was many years ago and I got it through you guys with an immediate replacement with a 1 TB drive. This is NOT a Premier; it is a series 3 HD XL.

A few people on the Tivo forums are having most of the same issues I'm having:

the bleep sounds stopping, requiring a reboot,
the phony error message about running out of guide data on a certain date,
      the eventual S03 errors,
      etc.

As I mentioned, I've NEVER seen a single deletion on this machine but, the way we fix these issues is to delete all of the 300+ recently deleted programs.

Well, I was hoping someone new something. I think the hard drive is OK, though as it passes all tests and we don't see any problems until the trash folder gets quite full.

      Thanks.

Try the deeper tests - the SMART tests are really very basic.

          Thanks

My Tivo has never been able to run ANY of the tests other than the s.m.a.r.t tests. They don't even start. Everything else seems fine though. As soon as "things" start happeneing, we usually just delete a bunch of stuff (usually, just the recently deleted items) and everything is back to normal.

Sounds like a drive issue to me.
