  • External cable card reader?

I have a couple of series 2 TiVos, both with lifetime subscription so I don't want to get rid of them. I have cable, and have always been able to get a bunch of channels without a set-top box; now the provider is changing and says I will need a box to get ANY channels. TiVos and their IR cable really don't play well with set-top boxes...so I wondered, is there an external cable card reader that will work with TiVo? I can find a bunch of cable card readers (kind of expensive) that talk about how they make your computer-based home theater work, but none mention TiVo. Anyone know if they will work to do what I want?
    Thanks!

Nope - you really need a full cable box (which might actually use a CableCARD, depending on your cable company).

It doesn't matter to me if the box uses a cable card, I was just trying to get around the box/TiVo interface, that silly IR cable that changes the channel on the box MOST of the time, just misses when it's scheduled to record the one program you really want... I'll just wait and see if their statement that I will receive NO channels is actually true.

Right - but the IR setup can actually work pretty well if you adhere the IR blaster to the underside of the front of the cable box.

Definitely wait and see - but many cable companies are completely moving to digital cable, so it's likely you will lose all channels.
