  • What can I do with a Series 2 Tivo?

I have a Series 2 Tivo with a lifetime contract sitting in a closet and don't know what I can do with it so I'm hoping that those of you who are more conversant with this technology can offer some advice. I think it was relegated to storage when we went to HD. I have Fios both at home and at my office - I read somewhere on this site that I could use this as a $100 credit towards a new unit - is that correct? Or did I misunderstand? Can I use this unit with a regular outdoor antenna and at least get some use out of it?

I appreciate your help with this question.

Well, the new unit will cost what it costs here:

But lifetime service will be $100 off from TiVo, since you have an active TiVo.com account by virtue of that unit. So it'll be $399.99 instead of $499.99.
    Been here a long time . . .

      Thank you for your reply.

My wife is very unhappy with the Fios DVR and in a couple of months it's going to start costing us $19.99 month so it makes a lot of sense to pick up a TIVO unit and I was going to do that here. I remember that the TIVO units are much more responsive than what we have from Verizon.

I guess my question then gets down to whether there is any use I can put the Series 2 unit I currently have anywhere else. At my office I have an older non-HD television on a FIOS connection. Is there any way I could use that Series 2 with FIOS or with an external antenna? For a mere $100 it would be well worth keeping it around and paying full boat for a new TIVO for home. For the use it gets at the office it would be well worth it.

      Thanks again.

You'd have to talk to Verizon to see whether they have a standard def, non-DVR set-top box that the TiVo can control. In the past, they have had these...but I just don't know what Verizon provides these days. I suspect that you'd be able to get one...but you can't get a DVR from Verizon if you want to use the S2 TiVo.

Jeff - I called Verizon, they had no clue what I was talking about. I don't think it was feigned ignorance, they simply were clueless. Can you give me any greater description of what I should be asking for?
