  • Controlling two TiVos with separate remote controls

Each TiVo can be uniquely addressed in the system information screen so that it will only respond to a specific remote control. Up to 10 TiVos can be addressed this way. Below are instructions for setting up your first two TiVos with separate remotes...

1 Cover the IR window of the TiVo #2. Do this well or TiVo #2 will get programmed at the same time.

2 Pick up remote control #1 and navigate TiVo #1 for to the System Information screen. (Messages & Settings: System Information). Scroll down with the Channel button until you see the Remote Address.

3 Hold down the PAUSE and TiVo buttons for 5 seconds. Let go when the red light on the remote turns solid.

4 Using the number buttons on the remote 1-9 (1-3 on a Sony), select and press a single number to assign the first TiVo. (For eaxmple, 1) The remote light will flash, but the screen information will not change yet.

5 Press the RIGHT arrow. The Remote Address on the TiVo screen should now show the new TiVo number.

    Phew! Halfway there...

6 Press the TiVo button to return to TiVo Central.

7 Carefully cover the IR window TiVo #1 and uncover the TiVo #2. Pick up remote control #2.

8 Hold down the PAUSE and TiVo buttons for 5 seconds. Let go when the red light on the remote turns solid.

9 Using the number buttons on the remote 1-9 (1-3 on a Sony), select and press a DIFFERENT single number to assign the second TiVo. (How about 2?) The remote light will flash, but the screen information will not change yet.

10 Press the RIGHT arrow. The Remote Address on the TiVo screen should now show the new TiVo number.

Press the TiVo button...your TiVos are now programmed to respond only to their assigned remotes.
That's all there is to it!

Thanks for the step by step instructions. Will this work with the new controls?

Any RF remote won't need this - the RF pairing is two-way and means the remote will only work with that TiVo.

But this does still apply for any IR only remote, or any IR/RF remote in IR mode.
      Been here a long time . . .

Thanks for the clarification on RF remote. And many alternatives found over the counter here thanks to WK-Jason for the detailed step-by-step instructions for IR remote. Was struggling with setting up two TiVos with two separate remotes. Done successfully now.

Press and hold the TiVo+Back buttons until the activity indicator light turns red. The remote control will then send pairing requests for 30 seconds
