  • Tivo HD thinks m-card is a single-stream card

I have a Tivo HD that accepts a multi-channel CableCard in slot 1, or alternatively, two single-stream cards in two slots, in order to record two shows at one. It has worked fine for some time, but occasionally I see a black screen with a gray border saying "call your cable provider". The screen goes away in a few minutes, or if I push "clear". After a couple of calls to Comcast, they suggested I replace the cable card.

Today I tried two new cards from the Comcast Store in slot 1, and they both have an identical problem. Even though they are multi-stream cards, the Tivo sees them as single-stream cards. This means I can only receive one channel at a time. Any ideas about how I might return this device to the way it worked. I spent phone time with Comcast, with Tivo, and with both on the line, and could not change the behavior of either card.

Does that mean I have a problem with my slot 1? I suppose I could try to get two single-stream cards from Comcast, but that will probably cost more.

Any ideas about how I might return this device to the way it worked this morning would be appreciated. Thanks!:

What is your exact TiVo model, and are you sure that the cards were properly programmed?

Thanks for responding, Jeff. Tivo is Series 3, from Tivo, Service number starts with "652" which you site indicates means TCD652160 TiVoHD High Definition DVR. the hard drive was replaced with a Weakknees 750GB drive, giving an HD recording time estimate of 116 hours.

I don't know if the cards were properly programmed. I picked them up at the local Comcast Service office here I exchanged the original one I had. Too bad I don't still have it!

Well, that model is definitely capable of getting two streams off the one M card.

Can you get some high-level tech to try reprogramming the card?

You asked if I could get a "high-level tech to try reprogramming the card"? I had the Comcast tech here today, and he seemed to know a lot about the CableCards and a little about the Tivo. Working with the Tech's over the phone, he could not get the Tivo to recognize this card as a multi-stream card. By "programming" did you mean what they call "pairing" the Card? I think that is not the problem, because the Tivo recognizes carsa as s-cards before any pairing is done. We have tried three new m-cards now, and all acted the same way.

The current solution is to put a second card in slot 2, and let the Tivo treat them both as single cards. That way, I can record two shows. Not very satisfying, and a little costly, but it does solve the problem.

Has anyone else had similar problems?

Could I have bent a pin inside slot 1 of the Tivo? (It doesn't look like I have, but it is not real easy to see.)

Is there some way to get the Tivo to forget what it knows about the CableCard? I looked at the list of kick-start numbers and none of them seem relevant. I did restart the Tivo. I also redid the "guided setup" but the card was recognized as a single-stream card right at the start of that process.

          Thanks again for any ideas.

I've really never seen the problem before. Comcast won't just not charge you for one card since they can't figure out the problem?

Is it possible that the cards are mislabeled and that they are, in fact, really single-stream cards? Can the Comcast guy make them do two streams in his own box?
