  • CableCARD Gray Screen after upgrade

I upgraded my TiVo HD Series 3 last night with a 1TB weaKnees drive due to rebooting issues. So far the TiVo has not rebooted, but it does show me the Gray/Black/White CableCARD screen for any digital channel. Occasionally it will show video on a digital channel, but if I change the channel I am back to the gray screen.

I called my cable company, Time-Warner, and after some difficulty (the first person I talked to claimed that I did not have a CableCARD and couldn't help me if I did ) the service rep re-paired the CableCARD. However, this did not resolve the issue.

In the process we determined that the CableCARD ID and Host ID had not changed as a result of the upgrade. The value for Data (under Host ID) had changed, but the service rep didn't seem interested in that.

    Any thoughts?

That's pretty hard to understand. Maybe a setup problem? Have you redone Guided Setup? Or even just rebooted the unit?

What about the old drive - even with rebooting, does it show the channels properly?

I did go through the Guided Setup and did try rebooting the unit after it was theoretically paired again.

With the old drive it did show the channels properly. I will try restoring the old drive tonight to see if that sill works.

Would any of the kickstart codes be worth trying?

One more thought: If the old drive does still work (albeit with rebooting issues), should I try to copy the old drive to the new drive using my PC? My thought is that this might carry over some of the configuration that was done when the cable card and tuning adapter were originally installed.

TiVo does have something posted regarding tuning adapters and my scenario: http://support.tivo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/148. Unfortunately, this article does not describe the symptoms of the issue they encountered.

I wouldn't start with copying. Try a kickstart 54 to test the drive.

I temporarily reinstalled the old drive and the channels are still not displayed properly. This surprised me since the problem started when I changed the drive. Thinking about it now, I think I need to redo that test. I installed the old drive, but I did not install the external drive that I had running with it. Therefore it was not the exact same configuration that I had before I started. I will retry this tonight.

I ran the disc check on the new drive and this found no problems.

The part that I find baffling is that this is not consistent. Some times it will display the digital/HD channel, but other times it goes back to the grey CableCARD screen.

I am also following up with Time-Warner again since I think this may still be a pairing issue.

Time-Warner has scheduled a technician for tomorrow (Thursday.) I will update this thread after that visit. Thanks.

                  Issue resolved

The Time-Warner technician replaced the CableCARD and Tuning Adapter. He then paired the new equipment. This solved the problem.

I am not convinced that the equipment needed to be replaced. In my limited experience, Time-Warner does not seem to have the expertise required to effectively install and service CableCARDS. The original install took 2-3 hours as did this recent service call. In any case, the problem appears to have been between the cable company's equipment and the headend.

Thank you for your help in troubleshooting this issue. I have to say the the hard drive upgrade itself went very smoothly. The instructions were crystal clear and having the TiVo software pre-installed on the drive made the swap incredibly easy. It is rare to encounter such thoroughness and competency in a technology company these days. Thank you WeeKnees!!!

I am having this problem now. TW came out and gave me new cable cards and a new tuning adapter but it did not fix it. Help!

Do you still menus? Recorded shows?
