  • THR22 can't exit "show live background" modep

A THR22 is in the mode in which, instead of a nice plain background color, active program video is the background behind all the home screens like Now Playing. This is discussed in the TiVo Users Guide but the instructions don't work with THR22.

Sounds like your hard drive lost its background screens. You could wipe it and reformat and that should fix it, but you'll lose all of your data of course.
    Been here a long time . . .

The firmware is designed to go to 'active background' mode if the normal background data is missing or corrupt?

The User Guide for a non-DTV receiver describes steps to enable/disable this live-background mode, using left and right arrow keys and the 'slow' key, so it's a design feature in that hardware. Those keys don't have a similar effect with THR22.

This problem did come after I replaced a failed drive and let the system do its normal initialization of the replacement. (Did the same replacement with an identical 2TB drive on my other THR22 with no problem.)

Is it likely that wiping the drive and letting the system have at it again will solve the problem, or might the initialization firmware itself be corrupt?

I don't know that I'd say it was designed this way - but we've seen that symptom before.

I've never seen corrupt firmware on one of these, but as they're getting pretty old, I suppose that's possible.

Disregard my -> "OT, suitable 2TB drives seem to be disappearing from the market. The WD22PURZ is indicated as discontinued by e.g. Newegg and B&H, with just a little "new" supply on ebay. Probably only of interest for THR22."

Despite none at Amazon or B&H or Newegg, the Western Digital site has them in stock. Sorry.
