    Premiere HD in a Series2?

    Hi gang, I purchase a 320GB Western Digital WD3200AVVS (AV-GP) hard drive taken from a new (never used) TIVO Premiere. I hope this will work as my plan is to upgrade/replace the original HD in my old DTV series2 RCA DVR40. Yes, I know the new drive is SATA, so I already purchased the SATA to PATA adapter from Weaknees.

    I plan to use WinMFS or wfslive boot CD to backup, image, and copy/recover the drive(via my PC). Any know issues with doing this? Will I need to format/clear the new drive before hand or will WFS take care of it? If I need to clear/format, how? Anything else I should know?

    It's a little more complicated, but it should work. You'll likely also need a new IDE cable, and you probably need to check the Intellipark settings on a WD drive, but the plan should work.

    Also, we always recommend a full drive scan before reusing a used drive.

      Why might I need a new IDE cable, damage from removal/age?
      Yes, I already created a wdidle3 boot CD to fix the intellepark issue if needed.
      Good idea on checking the drive. I just downloaded the WD Data Lifeguard Diag software.

      I re-read the WinMFS docs and sounds like it will format the drive for me. If not, it has more options that should work (praying, LOL!).

        We recommend an 80-wire cable with our adapters. Your old one may be fine, but for best results, we recommend the new one.

          Ah okay, wish I had known when I ordered your adapter. Do you guys sell those or can use any normal 80-wire IDE cable?

            Did you read the page where you ordered?

            Due to the throughput of SATA drives, we recommend our custom TiVo IDE cable for use with this adapter.

              Uh, yes I did but at the time I didn't know it was recommended and the site only said "adapter bundle with compatible IDE cable". I had a IDE cable (still not sure it isn't already a 80 wire as I have opened it up yet) and had no clue it meant 80-wire IDE cable included(recommended)!

                Update: Everything went great!
                Tested new drive (quick and extended reported no errors), backed up old drive (WinMFS), copied the old drive to the new drive (WinMFS), installed the new drive & adapter into our RCA DVR40 using the old original IDE cable, booted up twice and everything is working great! 280+ SD hours now, gotta love it!

                Only concerned that the Sata/IDE adapter seems kinda loose and could disconnect. We are RVers and the unit likely gets bounced around more than most in a house. Was thinking about maybe putting a tie-strap around it and the drive?

                  There's an adhesive pad on the adapter. Did you remove the backing? That stuff is pretty sticky.

                    Uh oh, nope, didn't know there was backing to remove! Duh, I saw the padded tape on it but i assumed it was there to keep it from touching/shorting on the hard drive? Would have been nice to have gotten some instruction with the adapter! I also notice a jumper on it but had no info on what it was for or how to utilize. (lights on it too?)

                    I guess if it disconnects some day, I will have to pull it apart and pull the backing.

                      There should have been a half sheet of paper with the adapter with all of this info. I apologize that it wasn't in there.

                      With the jumper cover in place, the drive is a "master." Yank it, and you have a "slave."
