  • Record Ahead of Signal Freeze

Lots of freeze threads but mine seems a little different.
Whether live or recording the record seems to get ahead of the signal and the screen goes grey and freezes up. I can cause it by fast forwarding to the end. It will clear up by rewinding. or by channel change. KS 57 reported discs ok. Anyone else have this issue or have a suggestion?
TIVO Series III HD 5 yrs old
    COX Cablecard
    external hard drive attached
Second TIVO Series II still works great after 10 yrs.

I really don't understand - how can you get ahead of a live signal?

Does it work on the financial channels with stock tickers?

      Getting Ahead of signal

Sorry, I guess I didn't describe it very well.
As your watching live and the recording indicator moves along the green bar at the bottom of the screen, everything is fine until it reaches the right end. First there's pixilation, then the screen freezes, then the grey screen appears. If you rewind the recording and hit play it plays fine until the end then freezes again.
This doesn't happen 100% of the time but it's causing partial recordings. I'm trying to determine if it's HD channels only or if it's channels with the 100 signal strength.

100 signal strength is way too high; I'd probably start there. You might want to search these forums for "attenuator," which will point you in the right direction.

            Attenuator - no change

Cox cable came out and checked the signal which they said was fine - not too high. He put a 3db attenuator on anyway and the meter dropped to a little below 100 for most stations. He wasn't familiar with the units of the TiVo signal strength tester - Does anyone know?????
Still have the problem - would the KS for the software reinstall do any good or is that a last resort when there's a real problem?

A KS probably wouldn't really help here.

In your first post, you said you did a 57, but have you done a disk check with a 54?

                Expander Issue

I did do the 54 and the discs reported ok. Now I was going to try to run TiVo without the Expander. I downpowered TiVo, disconneted the expander but now TiVo keeps saying it won't start without it. I did the thumbs down to permanetly delete it but TiVo still won't restart.
Also when I go to reconnect the expander, it won't power on. I'm getting in a viscious circle now.

Sounds like you need a new internal hard drive to get the unit to boot at this point (and I"d suggest you stop using the external), but also you need to remember that what Cox says is a 'fine' signal strength is not necessary 'fine' for a TiVo, which typically requires a weaker signal to avoid pixellation and picture issues.
