  • New hard drive won't spin

I purchased an upgrade kit for my old Series 2 TiVo 240080. It was stuck on the "powering up" screen, so I assumed it was the hard drive. I replaced this drive with the new one, and now I get nothing. The new hard drive doesn't spin at all. The only indication of power is a flashing red light on the SATA adapter and the fan barely wiggles.

I have unplugged and replugged everything several times, but no change.

I also reinstalled the old hard drive as a test. It will still spin up and get to the "Powering up" screen.

    Any ideas?

Probably, the new drive is actually spinning, but it's just almost silent.

Does your power supply have any burst capacitors? See the pictures here:

The capacitors look OK. Any idea why the fan runs OK with the old hard drive, but it barely wiggles with the new one?

It may be that the new drive draws a bit more current on boot, but either way, it still sounds like a bad power supply.

You were right. It was the power source. I swapped it out with the power source from another old Tivo I had, and everything booted up fine.

          Thanks.
