  • Starting to Get Black Screen with Dual External Drives with Backup

    Hi,

I'm occasionally starting to get the black screen flash when switching menu screens. Historically, this precedes a drive failure.

After my last failure, I purchased the "TiVoHD Dual-750GB External with Backup" and an extended warranty. The drive housing currently shows two flashing green lights and one solid red light. It is actually quite noisy, something that lead me (early on) to believe it might have a problem, but collectively (with your email support) we decided to let it be, since it seemed working otherwise.

    My two questions:

    1. Does this sound like a failure?
    2. If so, what should I do next?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Related: if it is presumed some sort of failure, what is the best course so that I don't lose my recordings or my settings (reason I purchased the dual :] )

Start by having the TiVo check the drives:

Sorry for the delay in my response (and test), I got called out of town for work. I just tried to run the test multiple times; each time, it starts to reboot as expected (after the three-light/54 combo). Then it hangs; I even let it sit for ~20 minutes. I get no kickstart hard drive testing menu, and the green HD activity lights on the external drive remain off (though the drive is, of course, on). Thoughts?

Hi, have you had a chance to see my reply? It is hanging when it does the reboot for the drive test. If I don't do the drive test, it boots normally.

I hate to say it, but I think you're just doing something wrong with the kickstart commands. Sometimes, they seem to be tricky for certain users, but they should work.

OK, I will try again a few times this week. As an aside, I have done it before, and I also had my roommate try it as well. Again, I'm happy to try it again over the next couple of days and report back.

OK - then it really should work. I've never seen it NOT work, unless the unit can't boot fully.
