  • Tivo not updating with digital tuner plugged in

The problem in a nutshell: My Tivo no longer gets updates when the digital tuner is plugged in.

The facts, as I best recall them:

I have a Series 4 Tivo purchased from Weaknees a year ago. When I initially got it, Time Warner cable had to install a digital tuner (Cisco STA 1520) in order to receive certain channels we purchased as part of an extra tier of programming, for instance Versus (ch. 267) or CSPAN-2 (ch. 202). After the DVR and digital tuner were set up, I left town for more than a month. I remotely programmed various shows through my laptop and all was fine. The 2010 Tour de France (on Versus) recorded just fine. The Tivo received regular and complete content updates during my time away.

At some point, let’s say 6 months ago, the Tivo stopped updating when the digital tuner was plugged in. If I recall correctly, I was seeing a “gateway not found” message, in the System Information menu. This was no big deal since at the time I had not been watching any of the channels like Versus that are only received with the tuner plugged in. So I unplugged the tuner.

Here is the dilemma. I am leaving town for a month in late June. I plan to leave the Tivo plugged in and set up remote recording, like last year. But I need the digital tuner plugged in too, so that I can record stuff like the Tour on Versus. However, if the tuner is plugged in, the Tivo will not update and my content will run out roughly two weeks after I leave. So I'll be unable to record most of the Tour.

How can I resolve this update issue? Can I do it myself? Does TW cable need to come out to the house? Did they screw up and not install the tuner properly the first time? Or is it something else? Anyone out there been through the same problem? I’m about ready to throw my hands up, dump the cable, and call Directv. But I figure I’ll try this forum first.

    I appreciate any help. Thanks.

I've honestly never seen a TiVo have a problem updating only when an SDV adapter is plugged in. Are you absolutely sure that's the situation? Can you force an update without the SDV, but not with the SDV? What exact error message do you get?

Here is the deal. I plugged in the DTA Friday night and left it on. If all was well my content would have updated Saturday morning. It did not. Saturday evening, DTA still plugged in, I went to Network Diagnostics --> Test internet connection. The test failed. The result was Router not found (N07). If I unplug the DTA, no problem connecting to the Tivo service or the internet. So what can I do to fix this problem? Thanks.

That's really the first I've ever heard of that.

        Maybe there's some interference?

Are you using an ethernet cable or a USB-wireless device?

I am using the Tivo wireless N adapter I purchased from Weaknees.

Have you tried just moving the actual N adapter further from the SDV adapter? Can you try it with a longer ethernet cable?

I will try moving the adapter a few feet away from the DTA and let you know how it goes. Previously it was right next to the DTA, so it may indeed be an interference problem. Thanks for the suggestion.

OK - the N really shouldn't create too much interference, but maybe if they're really close . . .

In fact it seems you were right, Michael. Good call! I moved the N-adapter a couple feet away from the DTA and the Tivo unit connected to the service and updated with no problems. I'll keep my eye on it for the next few days, but it seems that interference was the problem and it is now resolved. Thanks again.

OK - first I've heard, but it's not too surprising. Wifi seems to interfere with tons of things . . .
