  • TIVO HD won't boot up after kickstart 58

    I wonder if anyone has had this experience, or has ideas about what might have happened. I have a TIVO HD with its OEM drive an an external USB drive. I have had some problems in the past, and they were fixed by a kickstart diagnosis process. Yesterday I tried kickstart 58 (Media File Clean-up) and the TV said "downloading software". From that point on the TIVO will not reboot. It cycles between the "powering up" and "just a few minutes" screens. If the external drive is connected, then I also get a GSOD, but that disappears in a minute and the cycle restarts. If I unplug the external drive, I get asked if I want to divorce it, I answer yes, and the reboot cycle repeats again, getting back to the same screen. I am never able to get it fully booted.

    The behavior is the same if I also disconnect the cable, cable card and audio out connectors and remove the cable card (1 only). Entering other kickstart codes has not caused any change in the behavior.

    The TIVO diagnosis is hardware problem, but I am curious why a hardware problem would manifest it self just when I did this process. I would like to resuscitate the TIVO because it has a lifetime service pack. Any suggestions or ideas of what I should think about before replacing the internal hard drive?

    It sounds like a bad drive. I'd suggest you get a replacement drive. I'd also suggest you not use an external and just get a larger internal drive.

    Rather than the 58 test, you probably should have run a 54 drive test...but the experience you're having probably indicates a bad drive anyway.

      Thanks for responding. I am in the process of trying to test the Hard Drive in my computer, but I have to wait for an IDE to SATA converter. If the drive tests as bad I will replace it with a large one, as you suggest. But I am still curious (maybe frustrated) as to why a mechanical problem in the HD should show up when I run a diagnostic. Does anyone know what Kickstart 58 actually does?

          Hello Michael. Thanks for asking for a clarification. You asked "why wouldn't a problem show up on a diagnostic? " I expected the diagnostic would run and tell me there was a problem. Instead, the diagnostic did not run, the TIVO keeps rebooting, and I can't do anything with it. I would understand if I were watching the TIVO and the disk "failed", but it seems like it is a coincidence that the failure happened just when I tried to run the diagnostic. I would also understand if the software on the disk was upgraded (which the message I saw said it was) and then the system did not work.

          That is why I wondered if anyone knows what "Kickstart 58" actually does, or if they can educate me as to why the diagnostic might have caused the disk failure. Should be easy to educate me; I am pretty ignorant!

            The 58 does some routine utility tasks on the drive. It does do a fair amount of reading and writing and reorganization in the header tables, so it stands to reason that running that on a drive that's already failing could push it over the edge.

              We'll find out if it was the HD, as I have ordered a new internal one. Before I did that, I ran both the internal and external Hard Drives through the Western Digital Diagnostics program, which found no errors on either one. I would have been more confident about replacing the disk if they had been found to have errors!

                You could have software issues on the drive, that don't show up under a hardware test.

                  New HD works

                  The new Harddrive works -- at least for the first day. Your advice was effective! And having all the storage in the box is certainly an improvement. If I will continue to test the two old drives -- If i learn anything new I will post it here.
