Quick summary of my situation:
Purchased Tivo HD in August 2008, set it up with Fios with two S Cards.
After a few months, decided 160 GB was insufficient, purchased a 750 GB Seagate DB35.3, did the upgrade myself without any problems.
In September 2010 I moved, still have Fios, but was upgraded to one M Card instead of two S cards.
Last week, my Tivo HD started rebooting, initially randomly but progressing to the point of rebooting after 5-10 minutes of activity. I ran the kickstart 54 test, and the hard drive failed the test. I retrieved my original drive and swapped it back in, and the rebooting stopped, but the encrypted Fios channels were all grey screen because that hard drive was paired with my original S cards. I had a Verizon tech at my house for 3 hours Monday trying to restore the encrypted service, and one of the things he did was change out my M card for a different M card. Eventually I got my Tivo working again by performing a Tivo Clear & delete everything and then forcing it to pull the software update. So I currently have a functional 160 GB Tivo without the library of TV and movies I had collected.
I have purchased a 1 TB Samsung HD103SI to serve as my new Tivo drive, and before I start the upgrade process, I was wondering if I could get some advice about how to proceed. I would like to recover the programs on my Seagate drive if the damage to the drive will allow it.
Do I back up the Seagate and restore to the Samsung from that? If so, it seems like I might have problems with pairing the updated M Card. Or do I use the original drive image to upgrade the Samsung? If I did that, would I be able to transfer the shows off the Seagate onto the upgraded Samsung? Or is there another way I can extract the shows off the Seagate for viewing elsewhere?
