  • New TCD-540040 stuck at 'Welcome-Powering Up'

I know this has probably been discussed a million times, but I haven't found a post that mimics my exact symptoms yet.

My TiVo Series 2 TCD-540040 40 hr is not even two years old. It has been working fine this entire time and I have not hacked it or changed any of the inner workings. This morning, when watching a show, it kept freezing for about three seconds, then would play again. Finally, the TiVo shut down and rebooted completely on its own. Now, it is stuck at the half-yellow, half-black screen that says, 'Welcome Powering Up' and hasn't moved from that spot. Is this my hard drive or some type of software update glitch?

Sounds like the classic signs of a drive failure. You should consider a drive replacement kit, which you can find here for your unit:

Yeah, I kinda figured that. One question though. I am now stuck in a Green Screen Loop of Death on ANOTHER TiVo because I tried a kickstart because that one was failing too (this is not a good day for TiVos in my house). This loop has been going from 'Welcome Powering Up' to 'Almost There' to GSOD for about six hours now. Can I just yank the plug on this thing and buy a new hard drive for that too? I have no idea how to safely stop this infinite loop the TiVo is in.

Yes, you'll likely need a new hard drive for that one also. Maybe you had some crazy power event at the house that took out both units.
        Been here a long time . . .
