  • TiVo HD with Expander failing

I have a TiVo HD with a 1TB MyDVR Expander AV.

Recently it has started freezing and rebooting on me. I poked around with Kickstart 54, and found that /dev/hda failed the extended SMART test (FAIL 7 ?) But all the other tests completed. Not sure how bad that is, except that it still boots and runs for a while.

So, I'm trying to watch as much as possible off of it. Though it was only last summer where I replaced the 500G external with the 1TB.

I tried Kickstart 57 and 52 to see if that would help any. It didn't.

Thinking that I would just buy a 160G (looks like only as an upgrade kit on here) and copy as much as possible from the old drive to the new one. Will that make it so that I don't lose settings or cable card pairings (and most of my shows)?

I had replaced another machine under warranty, was a real pain trying to get cablecard re-paired...so want to avoid having to do that if I at all possible.

I think I can get into the process, even though until now I haven't done anything like this to any of my TiVos....but I had done drive replacements and upgrades on my ReplayTVs. Though haven't investigated resurrecting my 5080 with lifetime service (had upped it to 250)....the 5580 is still humming along on the 300G drive in it. But, haven't found anything (yet) on 'upgrading' a TiVo HD with an external drive, and just the internal to a same size drive.

All my TiVos have lifetime service....

Typically, you can change drives in a TiVoHD and not have to re-pair the CableCARDs. Changing drives is not like changing TiVos in this regard.

Well, was doing some reading on what was out there (that wasn't SpinRite or taking the drive into work for that), and came upon ddrescue. So feeling adventurous last night and opened up my TiVo HD and put the drive into an open drive bay of my Linux server and ran ddrescue on it.

It was humming along so well that I was being to wonder if there was a problem with the drive still (the TiVo HD had been stable for the last few days).

But, finished reporting errors. In the end two bad sectors.

I took the result and dd'd it to a new 160G drive and put that into my TiVo HD. So far so good. Though I wonder if I should've done the Kickstart 57 or if it'll be able to take care of itself... I was more hoping to see if it would start all the way up....

Only watched one recorded show so far....

I might still take the original drive into work to see what SpinRite thinks of it.

Noticed the date on the drive was "15 Jun 2007"....wonder how old the drive in my other TiVo HD is. I got that not long after this one....

Makes sense - if it had problems copying two sectors, but if those sectors were just in some recording, you'll probably never notice. If they were in the OS, you might get some problems.
        Been here a long time . . .
