  • Remote Address tied to Hard Drive (sort-of)

The Hard Drive recently failed in my Tivo HD, so I ordered a replacement from WeaKnees. Replacing the hard drive was simple and painless, but I did hit one minor snag that I wanted to make others aware of:

If you only have a single TiVo with a single remote, you can stop reading now.

If you have two TiVos in the same room, then you're probably already aware of the steps to assign each Tivo a Remote Address, so that each Tivo will respond to only one remote (or a 1-2 slider switch on a single remote) but ignore the other remote/switch.

I found that after replacing the hard drive, Tivo was a bit confused. The System Information screen showed that the Remote Address was still set to 1. However the TiVo responded to all remotes, as if the Remote Address was 0 (Not Set).

To correct this, I changed the Remote Address to 0 and then back to 1, and the issue was resolved. The Remote Address seems to be set persistently somewhere other than on the Hard Drive, so perhaps a reset would have brought them back in sync - however I did not try that.

    Hope this helps.

Hmm. Ok. I would have assumed it would reset to 0 and know it, but somehow it learned that the old drive was set to 1. I'm not sure where all of that is stored, but I guess some portion my be on the motherboard.

    Thanks for posting the tip!
