  • Tivo Series 2, DirecTV SD, severe pixellation and hanging

I have a Series 2 Tivo, SD DirecTV that has been getting more and more severely pixellated, live TV hangs and chokes, recorded programs do the same. It's getting nearly unwatchable. I hooked up the TV directly to the DirecTV tuner and not a pixel in sight for two days. We did a wipe and reset of the Tivo to see if this would help and it didn't really. I'm curious if this a hard drive issue or video card issue. What say you, oh mighty experts?

    Sounds like a bad drive.

How did you hook up the TV right to the tuner? Do you have a separate DirecTV receiver, and TiVo unit?

If you replay a bad segment, is it identical each time, or does it change?
    Been here a long time . . .

Yes, separate DTV receiver (as we are still in the SD stone age). So I just hooked up the coax from the DTV box to the TV instead of routing thru TiVo. Yes, bad segments are the same each time.

You may have a bad tuner. I think this might help you:

ahh but... it's not a directv TiVo. regular series 2 - TCD24004A we had it originally with Comcast but switched to DirecTV so it has a separate external DirecTV tuner?

OK - we can fix a tuner on the TCD24004A also - see this page:

hmm. makes me wonder though, if it wouldn't be better at this point to get a TiVo premier new, since it costs less than repairing the series 2? although the series 2 has a lifetime subscription...

ok before I sound too stupid, I don't know if you can use the Premiere with an external DirecTV standard def tuner.... so I was thinking in terms of the storage space at SD, not HD, which I know DirecTV broadcasts at different compression which makes it incompatible, yada yada yada.

Nope - Premiere won't work with DirecTV at all in any configuration.

You'd have to ditch DirecTV if you get a Premiere.

Hard to say which way to go, but the lifetime subscription is definitely worth something.
