  • Tivo Signal Strength

My Tivo S3 just started having freezing and reboot issues, but only during recorded video playback. I called Tivo and they had me do the HD test and both the internal and external passed and then they said it was a software issue. I waited two weeks and got the new software and am still having the problem even with recorded programs that used to play fine just a month ago. The next Tivo customer support personal said my signal strength of 100 was too high. He suggested disconnecting the cable and see if I still had an issue. I did. From what I've read on this site it seems like a clear cut hard drive issues, but is there any way this isn't the hard drive?

The 100 is pretty high and can definitely cause problems.

With the HD tests, did you do the overnight tests?

I did the very long tests that Tivo customer support suggested. I am assuming that is what you meant.

Yes - usually they're called "overnight" tests on-screen.

So you should try an attenuator.

Yes. I would suggest you talk to the cable company about reducing the signal strength. If you do a search in these forums for 'attenuator' you will find some additional information as to what others have done.

I haven't received my attenuator yet, but I reduced the signal strength through splitters and I still had the freezing issue during playback and added a significant problem with pixelation and choppy viewing of real tv. Hard drive replacement time?

If your drive passed all of the tests, I'm not sure a new drive is going to help, but you can try.

I just don't know what else to try. I'd welcome any suggestions or ideas.
