  • Grey screen while watching recorded shows

We are getting a grey screen, sometimes while live or streaming movies, but most interesting it happens while watching recorded shows. I know the recording is intact because I can go back and watch the full show when I get rid of the grey screen. The sound usually continues but not always. The remote responds.

The box is HD XL with comcast m card. Some diagnostic info the box reads 38 degrees and the signal strength is 100. The box is installed in a cabinet above a tuner, there are empty slots higher in the rack. My husband says even though the 38 degrees is tagged as "normal" it is too hot for computer equipment. I am in a wheelchair and cannot access the unit, so i would have to pay someone to move it ( hubby is too busy, really).

TiVo has been no help, they won't talk to me because i cannot access the back of the box and power cycle it to diagnose it. I reported this problem the first time while the box was in the one year warranty and they want me to pay 149 to repair it while they are charging 199 for refurbished Premiers. The money is not really an issue it is principal to me. I have been a loyal user, this is my fourth box, had to change boxes when comcast went digital. They should back up their products.

Any new info on grey screen? And it's causes. Is 38 too hot is 100 too high a signal strength? Thanks in advance for any help.

First - you can always reboot the unit on-screen via the remote. It's in Messages and Setup under Settings and then Restart or Reset System.

Next, you should try a hard drive test. See this:

I tried to do the kickstart procedure but I was not able to get it to accept the pause and let me enter the code. I tried it twice, can you be more specific about when to hold the pause and how long? The first time I did it as soon as the power appeared to cycle after the three down buttons and the enter. The second time I waited until I got a welcome screen. Neither worked.

You should be holding down the button from the moment you plug the unit in.

        Pull the plug.

Hold down the button pointing at the TiVo.

        Plug the unit back in.

Right, but I am rebooting via the remote, since I am in a wheelchair and cannot get to the plug...

I think you probably need to actually get the plug pulled to make this procedure work.

You should be holding the button from the moment the TV picture goes off, then.
