  • No live video or recorded programs

I have a series 2 Tivo with lifetime service.

The unit went kaput yesterday. I get menus, program info, can switch channels, etc., but no live video, just a light gray screen. Also, cannot view recorded programs . . .

I tried both a soft restart and a hard restart, but the problem continues.

My cable signal is OK because I can view it via another input on my TV.

Any idea what the problem may be? . .

Sounds like your tuner may have died. We can fix that here:

A faster and cheaper solution: make sure the video input to the Tivo is alive . . .

I did check my cable signal, but I had not checked the output of the cable tuner box that goes to the Tivo. It was off!! Apparently, the Tivo doesn't show recorded programs if there is no live video input to the box, and that threw me off . . .

Turned the cable box on and all is OK . . .

Actually, it should. Even with no video input at all, the TiVo will show its menus and recorded programs. Not sure how you had what you had.

You are right. Seems I was trying to watch shows that were recorded while the cable tuner was off, so obviously nothing was recorded.

I think I know how that happened, but won't bore you with the details. Just tell your grown-up kids who check the house while you are away on vacation not to play with any remotes they don't know how to operate . . .
