  • Replaced Hard Drive -- black screen

We got a replacement hard drive from WeakKnees today for our Standalone Series 2 Tivo, but all we get is a black screen.

I've tried the troubleshooting tips, and I THINK the hard drive is spinning. The input for the Tivo is a DirecTV satellite receiver, and I'm pretty certain the connections there are set up properly.

It's possible the Tivo itself is dead, but everything seems to go OK, other than that.

If the Tivo weren't working properly, would the light on the front be green? (and, when pushing a button on the remote, the amber light lights up, as well)

Even without a hard drive, you would get lights on the front of the unit. I don't know what model TiVo you have, but it sounds like you might have a power supply problem.

OK, I did some more testing, and it's not actually the Tivo. It's how all the various cables connect.

We have a fairly ... let's go with "antiquated" ... set up. We have a 14 year-old CRT TV, that we hook up both the standalone Tivo (with a DirecTV receiver attached to that) AND a VCR (whose only function is to serve as a pass through for both our DVD player and our XBox 360). The TV has minimal input options: 1 RF [coaxial] input and 1 set of composite inputs.

Every time I have to redo the connections, I mess it up. This time, I was certain I had it right. I was wrong. (You'd think I'd draw a diagram of how it all connects)

Everything appears to be working now. Thanks!
