  • 1 yr old weaknees drive in DSR704 DTivo dying?

Last year I had some issues with my old Phillips DSR704 Directv Tivo reciever, so I decided to go ahead and get a replacement drive for it rather than get one of the Directv DVRs (had one in another room and it was horrible!). I ordered a new, larger hard drive from Weaknees last spring, installed it and everything seemed to be going fantastically. Then, about a month ago I noticed that occasionally the picture would hang up, usually it happened if we had had the DVD player on for a while which was weird. The tivo would not respond to any input from the remote and I would end up having to reboot it to get it un-stuck. Then, in addition to the occasional freezing of the picture it started randomly rebooting itself.

When the freezing and rebooting started happening more frequently I searched the Weaknees site for possible causes of the problem and was hopeful that it was a power supply issue as the hard drive was practically brand new & the power supply was original to the unit. I ordered the new power supply, installed it and everything seemed to be working great...for about 8 hours. Then, I turned the DVD player off after my daughter watched a movie and bam...the picture on the reciever was frozen again.

So, did I just spend $70 on a new power supply for nothing? Does this sound like the hard drive is already going bad? Or, could it be a software issue? It's currently running software version 6.4a.

Any help, suggestions or answers would be greatly appreciated.

Your DVD player really should have no connections to or from the TiVo, so the TiVo should have no idea when the DVD is on or off. I would be surprised if that is the real issue--and you might want to try this TiVo on another TV to see if the problem goes away.

I had a similar problem with a new drive.I replaced the original drive for that same problem-pixelating and/or freezing up. Turns out-I think-was a fluctuating power coming into the house. I put a UPS battery back-up in and all seems well-several months now-and no-or very little problems
