  • Protection against lightning strikes

Recently we have lost a lot of equipment to lightning strikes, both coming through the telephone line and destroying first the modem/router and then various other things on the ethernet. The ReplayTV no longer connects to the internet, which makes it a boat anchor. So far the Tivo has been spared, but since we want a second Tivo and we always buy lifetime subscriptions, we are clearly concerned about lightning. We moved here only a couple of years ago, so we didn't realize the risk until now.

We are considering one of these:

    Tripp Lite TLP810NET

Belkin 12-Outlet Home/Office Surge Protector with Phone/Ethernet/Coaxial Protection

Are these sufficient? Either would cover power and ethernet in one package.

    Thank you for any advice,

    Judy

I'd recommend a UPS (uninterruptible power supply aka battery backup) with phone/ethernet/coax protection. There are some models of UPSs listed here, but you'd have to search around for one with all of those features.

      Ups?

For those who have tried out a UPS, how long has it lasted? I had a UPS (APC BR500) die (not just the battery, but the UPS itself) after 4.5 years, and I'm wondering if this is typical.
