  • Diagnose Tivo-Stuck on Powering Up

Please help me diagnose my Tivo.
Phillips DSR704 DirecTV Tivo - Upsized HD to 250GB WD
Stuck on "Welcome, Powering Up", previously had been freezing. I assumed it was the HD and imaged a 200GB WD that I had. I stuck that in and got the same result. I put the 1st drive in my PC and it seems OK. I could read the OS and MFS partitions.

The fan spins and I can hear the HD spin up and then spin down repeatedly, but it does not progress. Booting with no HD has the same result (w/o the spin).

    Thanks in advance.

What image file did you use to format the new drive? Could that image have been corrupt and unbootable?

We'd really recommend trying a drive of ours:

I used the same image that I had created the 1st HD with and had been working for a year, so I think it is unlikely. I also have an old 3.x image (instead of the 6.2) that I could try. I could also try just the vanilla image w/o the Cake and Zipper.

You should try it without the hacks. Those are known to cause many different problems.

OK. I can give that a try.

Do you think it could be the power supply?

Most of the time (but not always, unfortunately) getting to "welcome, powering up" means that your TiVo has a working power supply, so I doubt it. But it is possible in a very small percentage of cases (like less than 1%, would be my guess).
