  • WeaKnees drives keep looking for external storage

So I toyed around with a set of TiVo drives and got nowhere. Hence, I sent two of them back to WeaKnees to have them prep'ed as dual replacement drives. They came back yesterday, just in time to get my Series 2 TiVo back up and running for all the Christmas specials. After putting the machine back together and plugging it in, it started up fine only to then display the “External Storage Missing” (ESM) message.

After researching the subject I checked the PowerTrip and yes, it was tied into the master drive's (Drive A) power cord. Still, I tried it without but to no avail.

Next, I only connected only the master drive. Again, the machine started up fine but then gave me the same ESM message. This time, I chose to follow the instructions hoping that this would get the machine up and running at least on one drive. After a few minutes, the TiVo rebooted only to show the ESM message. I tried it a few more times, but the result remained the same.

At that point, I went back to the original 40GB drive that was in my TiVo. As it was last combined with a second drive from WeaKnees and I put it in just by itself, I got the ESM message again. After following the instructions, the machine rebooted and started up nicely. I took the opportunity to connect to the server, hoping that a software update may take care of the problem.

Unfortunately, the result remained the same with two newly prep'ed drives. When I add Drive B to my original TiVo drive, it is not recognized either, leaving me with the puny 40GB storage capacity.

    What am I missing?

    My set up:

    TiVo Series 2 (TCD540040)
    + Drive A: WD3200AVJS (with SATA-to-IDE converter)
    + Drive B: Maxtor QuickView 6L250R0
    + TwinBreeze Bracket
    + PowerTrip

All jumpers are set correctly and the PowerTrip is connected to Drive A. All add-on components were bought from WeaKnees and the drives were prepared by WeaKnees too (Repair #U269863).

That could be a failing B drive. The prep went fine here, but how old are the drives?
    Been here a long time . . .
