  • Replacement Drive Didn't Fix Series 3 - Other Ideas?

I have a Series 3 and it started acting up a couple of weeks ago--would reboot itself, OS in general was incredibly slow, etc. Finally things got to a point where all the TiVo would do is reboot itself in an endless loop. It would show the "Powering Up" screen, then the "Almost there ..." screen, and then would reboot before getting any further.

I purchased a replacement drive from WK which I installed today, but the TiVo is exhibiting the exact same behavior. Shows "powering up" and "almost there," and then reboots again. If I leave it plugged in it does this endlessly and never gets further than the "almost there" screen.

I haven't had the cable cards plugged in for about a week, and even without the cable cards it still behaves the same way. I am using the wireless network adapter but unplugging that didn't make any difference.

Any ideas why it might be behaving this way? Does this mean there's something more serious wrong with the unit itself? Would the next thing to try be the power supply, or am I wasting my time/money at this point?

Thanks for any ideas anyone has.

That could be a bad power supply.

But, before you try that, if you post or email us your exact TiVo model number and your order number, we can make sure that the right OS is on the drive.

Yup - you've got the right drive.

Series3 TiVos do seem to be dying more and more, and some problems just don't seem to be fixable. But your problem isn't exactly like those, so I'd recommend trying a replacement power supply at this point. Those are here:

Thanks--just ordered the power supply. If that doesn't work I guess I have a nice doorstop. ;-) Hate to order a new one if I can salvage this one but we'll see how it goes.

OK - if it doesn't do the trick, post back, and we'll see if we can help further.

New power supply arrived yesterday--thanks for the speedy shipping on that. But with the new power supply in the unit won't power up at all. I'm pretty darn sure I have everything connected correctly because at least when I put the old power supply back in the thing powers up.

Did I just get a bum new power supply or is there something else I should check?

Sorry to say, we've started seeing this problem on more and more Series 3 units. The unit is just totally dead - no lights, no fan, nothing. And no video out.

We have a few of these here, and known-working power supplies don't help, and new hard drives don't help. Something on the motherboard seems to be causing the problem, but we haven't isolated the component yet.

Sorry to say, we don't have a fix for you at this point.

Thanks--guess it's time to replace this with something else.

Forgot to ask--is it possible to return either of these items? I couldn't find anything about your return policy on the main site.
