Which Model to Buy?

This may seem dumb, but I've been using a Directivo for years now and love it.

With that said, I'm thinking of getting my aging folks a TIVO for Christmas to replace their VCR. They are on standard cable, not digital, no cable box, no HD service and no plans for HD right now. A series 2 Tivo makes the most sense but I must mention they do watch on a High Def TV.

Here is my question, will a HD Tivo unit work on standard old cable? Yes, I know it will be recording SD signals but if they decide they want HD, I don't have to buy a new unit. I also figure, that HD unit will can utilize the HDMI output as well.

All comments and suggestions welcome.

Yes, the TivoHD will work on standard old cable...if they don't have a cable box now, the TiVoHD will work the same as the old unit. Without CableCARDs, they will be able to get HD only if the cable company sends HD cable channels in a way that does not require a cable box. If they get CableCARDs from the cable company, then they will get all stations that they subscribe to.
