  • S3 still reboots after hard drive replacement

My S3 was randomly rebooting maybe 6 to 12 times a day whether in recording mode, replay, live tv or with the tv off all together. I have analog cable with an amplified indoor over the air antenna. No cable cards. Plugged into a surge suppression power strip. Wireless network. My troubleshooting attempts have included unplugging the wireless network antenna and cable and OTA antenna inputs.

I replaced the drive with a 500GB Western Digital drive (kudos on the directions, it was easy). I also added UPS battery backup power supply. but the problem remains. There is no change in the symptoms leading me to think that the hard drives were not the problem. This is my fifth S3, four of which developed the same random rebooting problem.

I am so frustrated. For about $150, Tivo has offered to replace this with yet another remanufactured model but I have little faith now in the quality control of that process. Any suggestions?

First, how old was the unit when it started having these problems?

Next, have you tried disconnecting the cable TV line?

Finally, we do have replacement power supplies for these. Rebooting is much more likely to be the problem, but it can be a bad power supply sometimes.

All of our TiVo power supplies are here:

I've had the unit for about 14 months but it was a replacement from Tivo so I don't know it's real age.

I'll try disconnecting the cable line. What if that solves it though? That obviously doesn't leave me with a functioning unit. Would the issue be a "polluted" signal through the cable?

Or, more likely, a bad tuner chip on the motherboard.

          Results...

With the Cable TV disconnected it rebooted a couple of times in about an hour. Then I disconnected the antenna and network connection leaving only the power and HDMI connections in place and it continued to reboot several times in the span of a couple of hours. The TV was off for all of this.

Huh. Then a power supply might be worth trying.

Well this sure got interesting. I decided to leave it unplugged overnight just so I wouldn't be tempted to throw something at it and now it hasn't rebooted in three days and seems to be running normally.

It's possible that you had a capacitor that needed to fully drain, or a some motherboard component that needed a hard reset or something.

                Good luck!
