  • Fast Fwd/Rwd stalls on Series 2 DirecTivo DSR708

I have a Weaknees refurb Philips DSR708 with 250 hr capacity with vers 6.4a that has started strange problems:

    1) The Fast Fwd and Fast Rwd seems to 'stall'
    2) At the end of a play there is a distinct lag of up to 5 seconds before the Delete/keep screen
    3) Recently I have witnessed a premature completion. Last night Dancing with the Stars ended at 0:53 but was two hours. This was recoded from the Season Pass.
    4) Sometimes during live TV, the Guile is slow to come on.
    5) When I go to Now Playing, the lists shows maybe 4 lines, stalls a few seconds, then completes.

It seems as if some process is running and is causing a delay. I did a power cycle w/o any performance changes. Now I have enabled the S-P-S-IR-S to display the tuner status to see if this is associated with one particular tuner.

Any thoughts or ideas greatly appreciated!

Have you tried pulling the plug and restarting the TiVo?

Sorry--I missed that in the initial post. You might consider a 'clear and delete everything' in the system reset menu. That will install a fresh version of the TIVO OS. If it doesn't make it through the clearing/deleting process, then you might have a bad drive.

Doesn't that delete all of my existing recordings? Yuk

Before I do that, I have identified some more issues:

          * the remote seems to lose contact

          * a FF/RWD seems to skip at a full second rate

          * several season pass programs are not being recorded - says someone changed the settings

Agree sounds like it needs to be cleaned completely, but drastic - hoping for some miracle answer

Have requested a complete reset - says up to an hour.

It's been 3 1/2 hrs so far and still says 'Clearing and deleting everything'

This disk is SD and about 220 hrs capacity - should I be concerned that it is still busy with a flashing Red/Record lite at apx 1Sec rate?

With a larger drive, this can actually take up to 24 hours. So let it sit overnight.

If it doesn't come out of this screen by tomorrow, then your drive is likely bad.
                Been here a long time . . .

Thx Michael - I got this msg after waiting 16 hrs and after doing a power cycle on the unit. It went from 'Welcome. Powering up..' to 'Almost there' then back to 'Clearing'.

Do you suppose that the time has restarted all over again?
Is there some sort of time-table vs capacity that is available?

That's really not a good sign. If it reboots into C&D, then you've pretty clearly got a bad drive.

                      Ok - I give up.
I have (temporarily) replaced the DirecTivo with a DTV R15 - what a come down!

I think it is time to have you repair this box.
Where do I send and how to pay?

I have temporarily replaced this Tivo with a DTV R15 and don't like it already!

I need to send this box for repair. Can you tell me where to send and how to pay?

I think WK-Michael was right...you need a new hard drive. You can order here:
