Is this a sign that the equipment is going bye-bye? I'm trying to hold out for the new TIVO/DirecTV unit so I can finally see the high def that my new tv is capable of, but if this unit goes before the new unit is available (if it ever is) should I just buy a DirecTV unit that has high def to hold me over? I can't tell you how much I hate the DirecTV units. Can anyone help direct me? Thanks in advance

That's almost definitely a hard drive problem. A "replace" kit for your model should fix the problem:
