  • Tivo HD Rebooting Constantly

    Hello,

I know this issue is explained in other threads but so far none of the solutions have fixed my problem.

As soon as my Tivo boots up and shows the welcome video, about 2 seconds into the video, the Tivo reboots. It does this over and over again.

I called Tivo support and they told me to remove the cable cards and the coax cable and try to reboot it again. I did this and this time instead of the welcome video, it came to the Cable Card screen, but again, stayed on this screen for about 2 seconds before it rebooted again.

Tivo support told me they could replace my Tivo for $150 but I decided to see if I could fix it myself before going that route. Thats when I started scouring the internet. I found out about the Tivo Kickstart options so I started playing with that. I input code 54 to run some hard drive tests. I ran the S.M.A.R.T. Hard Drive test and the drive passed all of the tests. Since it was about 1 o'clock in the morning at this point, I decided to run the "Overnight Test" and go to bed. This is the state I am currently in.

Has anyone experienced this before? Any idea of what it might be? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I don't know what I'm going to do with out my Tivo... =(

    Thanks all!

I'd let the overnight test complete and see if your drive passes. If it does, you should have TiVo replace the unit. If it doesn't, then you might consider a new drive.

I'm having a similar issue, but I can't even get the Kickstart utilities to show up. My problem began when I restarted and the screen indicated a service update was being applied. From then, the "Powering up.." screen comes up over and over.

I have two HDs so I made a backup of the functioning hard drive from the working 'good' one. I put a new 750GB drive based on the backup into the rebooting HD. I still had the ethernet cable attached so when I turned it on, it applied the service update to the new drive. The result was the same: reboot after reboot.

I then took that drive and put it back in the 'good' Tivo. It works fine. No problems. So I'm thinking the 'bad' Tivo has another problem (power supply?). The 'bad' Tivo is older by more than a year, and the power supply looks less robust: it has fewer doo-dads and heatsinks than the newer one.

Could this be the culprit, or is the motherboard also suspect?

If both of your TiVos are the same model number, then I agree--your problem is not drive-related. Given those symptoms, it is more likely motherboard than power supply, but I'd recommend you try restoring the backup and then putting that drive in the 'good' TiVo. The service update should be applied and the drive should work fine. If it does, then you know the bad TiVo truly is bad--something not drive-related.

I've determined it isn't the hard drive. I put the hard drive from the 'bad' Tivo in the 'good' one and it fired up OK. Gave me Error 51, but that is expected.

So what are my options? Is there a way to rule out either the power supply or the motherboard?

Best bet is to just swap the power supplies and see what happens.

My co-worker is having the same issue as me!

I just wanted to see if anyone else is having this same issue as me. I came into work today and my co-worker said he is having the same issue with his Tivo HD.

Fortunately for him, he bought his Tivo from Weaknees and has a warranty. I bought mines from Best Buy without a warranty because I was unaware of Weaknees at the time.

The issue is that every time the Tivo comes up, say to the Tivo spash video or to the cable card screen (with the cable cards removed), the Tivo reboots. Mine reboots after about only 2 seconds. My co-worker said his might stay up for 10 to 15 seconds, but then reboots as well. The only difference between us is I have Cablevision and he has Comcast. (both in NJ)

Both of our Tivos pass all of the KickStart tests. I just purchased a replacement drive from Weaknees, but now I'm not so sure that is the issue. Now I will have a broken Tivo and a brandy new drive that doesn't fix my issue. I am not very happy. If anyone can help, please let me know. Thanks.

Have you installed the new drive?

What model is your TiVo and how old is it?

Looks like my problem is the motherboard. After doing some power supply gymnastics between the good and bad units, I've ruled out the power supply and hard drive.

What are the options, if any, for replacing the motherboard?

We can do some motherboard repairs here. What model is it?

Tivo HD. On the back it says: "Model No. TCD652160"

For that model, you'd need to do a swapout with TiVo.

Oh well. Thanks for your help. At least in the process I learned some stuff and upgraded the harddrive of my working Tivo.
