  • Tivo in apartment building

I just moved from Knoxville where I had 3 R10 units running off of a multiswitch in my home. I'm now in Chicago in an apartment building that has DirecTV service, but the boxes they gave me are just the stripped down non-DVR boxes. I want to use my existing Tivo units, but when I attempt to use them in place of the standard receiver, the setup stalls when trying to download the satellite information. The rep at the third party provider said that newer apartment buildings won't work with older Tivo units like mine. This sounded sort of fishy to me. Can anyone help me diagnose the problem so that I can use my beloved Tivos?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

You might have a SWM system in your building, which doesn't work with legacy receivers like the R10.

How can I tell if this is the case?

You'd have to ask the landlord.

If the building has one of these SWM systems, what are my options if I want a Tivo branded DVR?

None will work currently. DirecTV and TiVo should have a unit out in early 2010 that will be SWM compatible.
