  • One of two drives most likely bad - Can I save data on the other?

I have a DVR40 with a Weaknees addon drive. One drive has most likely gone bad. I figure I'll get a replacement drive kit but can I save any of the data files on the good drive?

Also, is it possible to hook up an external drive to this unit (Hughes SD-DVR40). And since the answer is probably no, is there a Directv Tivo unit available that would give me more features than the DVR-40?

It's pretty complicated to try to save data in that situation. Unless it's mission-critical, we wouldn't recommend trying.

There's no way to do an external for that unit.

There will be a new DirecTV HD TiVo by the end of the year, reportedly, so that should have more features.
    Been here a long time . . .

hard drive problem maybe due to bad fan

It appears at the moment that the drive problem I was having was due to a bad fan. The problem I was getting was a grinding noise followed by freezing images and then a blank screen. Banging on the box would get it going temporarily. I opened the case up and found that the add on fan (two years ago I installed a Weaknees add on drive with fan) was noisy so I disconnected the fan. The noise went away and so did the video issues. I'm guessing the fan was shorting out the drive function? Anyone ever heard of this? Is it going to be okay to operate the system without the internal fan?

We'd recommend a new fan, see:
