  • Value of a Toshiba RS-tx20

I recently picked up a Toshiba RS-tx20 at the flea market. It looks clean however it doesn't get past the welcome screen although twice I got the green screen that said it needed three hours to fix itself. After three hours still nothing. Then again still nothing. The hard drive makes some clicking noises. HDD and DVD lights both come on then eventually go out display shows welcome. Everything seems pretty good but never gets past welcome.
I never hooked a phone wire to it. Would this prevent it from getting past the welcome screen? I see I can buy a freshly formatted drive from Weeknees for just over $100 I'm wondering if it is worth it to revive this unit. I like it because it has DVD writing onboard. But I'm concerned that it may be considered obsolete shortly. What is the value of this unit and is it worth investing in a new drive?

The unit is nowhere near the point where it would need a phone line.

It does sound like a bad drive, and a replacement should fix it:

Hard to say what the value is, but it's a great unit with both the free TiVo Basic service, and the internal DVD burner. It's one of the models with the most features, short of HD.
    Been here a long time . . .
