  • Hard drive on last leg--can I rescue recorded content?

I have a DirecTivo Samsung SIR-S4080R and it has frozen up twice. Looks like a bad hard drive. I had to pull the power cable to get it to respond to me. After it rebooted it managed to continue running and taped a 2 hour show, but later froze up again. I've got it unplugged now. Assuming it's got several hours of life left in it,

    (1) Is it possible to buy a new hard drive from weaKness and transfer my shows to the new drive? I work in IT and would like to do this without having to ship it to have it done (if it's posssible). NOTE: This unit has only one drive in it--it's the original one. Is cloning the drive or copying the recorded content to my PC an option?

    (2) If it's possible, what kit or things do I need to buy. I'll glady pay to get the drive that's ready to go with TIVO software. Please be specific and then I'll order these items.

    (3) Can you provide a link to the instructions I'll need?

    Many Thanks.

1 - We can do the transfer (or at least attempt it). If you want to do it, we have some instructions here:

2 - We sell the bare DVR-specific hard drives, the tools, and any other parts:

This link you reference does not seem to be valid. Can you verify?

Be patient with me if you would. I've spent a lot of time looking through the forum and on Google and I still have some questions.

Is it as easy as purchasing the bare DVR-specific hard drive (160GB-PATA) from weaKnees and using the Linux DD command to clone my old hard drive (80GB-PATA) and then put the drive back in the DVR? Are there post-cloning tasks that I will need to do as well before the drive will work? Are your interactive Tivo upgrade instructions necessary for me if I'm going to clone the old drive?

You'll also need to expand to get the extra space.

If you want to go that route, see the info here:
