  • Cablecard question?

I have a HD TV using a cablecard installed in TV. I split the signal to TV - antenna "A" and Tivo (Tivo then feeds back to TV) on antenna "B". Allows me to toggle from live TV to Tivo and back using TV remote.

How would I have to connect to a HD Tivo DVR using the existing cablecard? If I only use the "one" card I believe I'll only be able to record one show at a time. Would I leave the card in the TV or move it to the Tivo? If so, how does signal get back to TV? Would I have to use Tivo to change channels? How would I be restricted?

    Thanx - Dean

You'd have to get a separate, new card for the TiVo. With the right card(s) in the TiVo, it can record two shows at one time.

Your TV and it's cablecard slot are not and cannot be used by the TiVo. You could move the TV's card to the TiVo and have the card reprogrammed, but then the TV won't have a cablecard in it.

If I didn't use a cablecard and just connected the cable like it is on my Series 2 would I still get the channels like I do now or do you need a cablecard to recieve a signal at all? I'm not overly concerned about recording 2 programs at once.

You'd only be able to access the non-scrambled stations. I can't say whether the HD versions can be accessed without a CableCard. It varies from cable co to cable co. You'd still be able to record two without a card, but you can only get the stations that do not otherwise require a cablecard/cable box.

How will either the SD or HD Tivo's handle the signal once the "digital" switch is flipped? Will the cable connected directly to the Tivo still work without the cablecard?

          Thanx again - Dean

The digital switch basically only involved OTA (antenna) broadcasts, most of which are already digital, so you may already be getting them. The "switch" means that the analog versions are being turned off.
