  • Is Tivo service required?

I have a Tivo Series 2 540040 4 yrs. old with a possible failed hd (GSOD). I'm upgrading to an HD DVR to replace it w/lifetime service.

Question - If I replace the hd in the failed Series 2 can I use it like a VCR? Does it work in manual mode (EX: record ch 6 from 8-9 on Tues) or would I need another service agreement?

    Thanx - Dean

Nope. That unit won't work at all without service.
    Been here a long time . . .

Is there a list of units that will work as a VCR, without being activated? I have a 540 Series 2, but I was thinking about getting another just as a basic recorder.

Most early-model Series1 units do (HDR series and SVR2000). The Toshiba units and the Pioneer units also don't require service to work as a VCR.
