Problem:
Recently, playing music from my PC upstairs on my TiVo S3 downstairs has become totally worthless--it used to work with no problems.
It plays a while and then stops.
--Sometimes it re-starts on the next song.
--At other times, it just has intermittent dropouts (1sec <).
--Still, at other times, it conks out completely, and I get a message that the server must be busy ("make sure TiVo desktop is running with the server turned on") or that the network (Powerline ethernet) has experienced a problem ("make sure all the connections are connected sort of thing").
--This all began in the last month, and the only changes I have experienced (of which I'm aware) are the usual Windows XP (SP3) and Office 2003 Updates.
Here's what I have:
I have a Series 3 that I bought in December (Weaknees) with a 1TB HD downstairs. Its connections pass through a backup and line conditioner unit (Belkin) to a Powerline module for ethernet. Additionally, it has two S-cablecards (Motorola from Comcast).
Upstairs is the PC connected battery backup and line conditioner and to a router with one cable going from the router to the corresponding Powerline module for communication. Another cable goes from the router to the DSL modem. I have configured all the IP addresses for the two TiVo boxes I have, for the computer I have, and for the internet gateway (modem) I have. They all have the same first 3 sequences of numbers with the final ones being 1) gateway, 2) PC, 3) downstairs Series 3, 4) upstairs Series 3 (connected directly to router and not through Powerline).
Here's what I've done and the results:
--Checked Powerline modules for any of the green lights going off. Nope.
--Run the Powerline software to monitor activity: All ok.
--Checked for updates to Powerline firmware: None
--Turned off my firewall (Trendmicro) and even virus protection. No help.
--Uninstalled and reinstalled my TiVo Desktop (2.7 Pro). No change.
--Disabled and re-enabled home network communications in the TiVo menu. No help.
--Run diagnostics on my computer, defragged the hard drive (don't think it matters), optimized for performance. No change.
Another (possibly related) data point: I do have to say that when I play the music channels from Comcast, I sometimes experience irritating dropouts and have had power boosters put in place by them to level out the signal across all bands (with marginally better results, if at all).
**I am wondering if my S3 actually has problems with buffer underruns or overruns and if it is a defective unit.**
Any help would be appreciated. It'd be nice to use my PC as a jukebox for gatherings.
Thank you.
