  • Series 3 trouble and questions...

I've been dealing with a troublesome Series 3 for about 6 months now and someone highly recommended Weaknees. I've had my series 3 since they first offered them (so I paid the big bucks). Last year I added the TIVO official My DVR expander. Everything worked great until September. I had what appeared to be 2 problems -

    1. Pixellation and break up on all channels - and stuttering on HD channels: I had the cable cards replaced as well and that didn't help. - but then I added an attenuator and dialed down the signal. Now I can watch all channels live, including HD - and can record in SD.

    2. Stopped recordings and freezing on HD channels: this is the one that's killing me since I haven't been able to record any HD and I've had to turn off suggestions (which is the feature I really loved). When trying to record in HD - the system will also almost always reboot. From reading around these forums and elsewhere - I've come to the conclusion that it must be a hard drive issue - either with the external or with the internal.

I'm already planning to lose the external drive entirely and just buy an upgrade kit here for the internal drive. Problem is- I'm scared to unplug the hard drive because I have recordings (made before I added the external drive) that I don't want to lose. I transferred the recordings over to my Mac - but I have a few questions that maybe y'all can help me with.

    1. Is there any way to transfer my recordings from the old drive over to the new drive? Either over a network, cable or through TIVO transfer (I know I can transfer from the TIVO to my computer - but I see no way to transfer from a computer to a TIVO)?

    2. If you unplug an external drive - do you lose everything or just the stuff on the external drive?

Any other suggestions? Thanks for any help!

Take 2 first: If you unplug the external, you will keep anything that was recorded only on the internal.

As for 1: You actually can move content from a PC back to a TiVo...but it doesn't work for a Mac as far as I know. See:

Transferring from a PC back to TiVo (requires a PC):

Thanks, Jeff. I was able to use Windows on my Mac to install the Desktop Plus software - and have successfully transferred the files and tested sending one back. Almost ready to unplug that external drive... and just get a Weaknees upgrade and toss the stupid thing out...
