Directv HDVR2 "Welcome powering up" only

I have a Hughes HDVR2 (Directv) that will not go further than the message "Welcome, powering up." I thought it might be a hard drive problem and so I changed out the hard drive with a new one. The problem persists. I am quite familiar with upgrading Tivo units and have done hard drive swaps in the past. So I believe I did the swap correctly. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Did you load the drive yourself? If so, do you know you used working software?

I made up a new disc (80 gb) and then checked it in another Directv unit. Then I placed it in the Hughes and it did not work. Worse yet, when I pulled the drive, it was ruined. It needed to be reformated and even then I lost about 5 gb that could not be retrieved.
