  • Can TiVo HD record in HD over analog cable?

New here -- sorry if this is an old question.

Some background. I've had a Series 2 with lifetime plan since 2001 or 2002. I just bought my first HDTV and was surprised to find out that my cable company is offering some digital channels over my analog cable. For example, for me Channel 3 is the Weather Channel, but 3.1 is the 1080i version of NBC. (The local NBC affiliate broadcasts over the air on Channel 3.) It was great to find out digital versions were there for the Big 3 and a few other channels as well. (Is there a word for that? To describe digital channels offered via regular cable?)

And now that I'm getting used to the wonderfulness of HD it's getting hard to watch SD. I'm thinking of buying a new HD TiVo to capture all that HD goodness, which leads to my question...

Will an HD TiVo be able to record HD content from Channel 3.1 and all its x.1 brethren right out of the box? Or will something else be required? And if, later down the road, I upgrade to my cable company's full enchilada HD plan, will my new TiVo need anything else?

I'm guessing I'll need to buy a whole new lifetime plan, won't be able to just carry over the old one.

    Thanks for any advice,

    Lauren

Yes, the TiVo HD will be able to record from your cable line directly, without anything more. If you upgrade your cable package, you will need CableCARDs from the cable company, which they will provide to you.

Thanks, WK-Jeff! I think I remember seeing you guys on the "Screen Savers" or some TechTV show a few years back. Glad you're still in the TiVo business.
