Using Old Tivo Unit

I have ordered a new Tivo DVR (because the DVD burner went) and was wondering if I can use the old unit without the updating from Tivo (don't want 2 accounts) for manual recording just by connecting it to the TV and no phone line?

Sorry, that unit requires a TiVo subscription to function.
