I have a Series 1 that i put a new hard drive in last year (went great- thanks to WeaKnees!!) I reacently had to upgrade to a Series 3 (digital transition)..and now I want to use my Series 1 as a vcr...unfortunately I started the "set up" process and now am in set up hell...it won't let me do anything because it keeps trying to dial in and get service...I had to switch my lifetime service to my new tivo....i heard there was a hack that allowed me to use my Series 1 just as a vcr???? Help !! Thanks!!!!

It should just work as a DVR without a problem. What happens when you dial it in? You do have to do that to get it to work again, but no hacks should be necessary.Been here a long time . . . -
I tried to set it up while connected to cable (at an old beach house) but there's no phone service there..... are u saying that if I bring it home, connect it to a phone line through my modem that it will "re-set" even though my service has switched to my new machine? [by way of background, i used to have it set up thru an antenna at my regular home, now i want to set it up as a vcr at an old beach home, but the diff is the beach home has cable...I started the set up process with it hooked to cable, but not hooked to a phone line......, so i want the TIVO to recognize the cable channels so I can use it as a vcr and record by time, etc...Comment

you are going to have to get through setup using a phone line, and then you should be able to use the unit as a glorified VCR.Comment
