  • TIVO-HD Performance Probs...need a GURU

    Hey guys...

    Hopefully someone can help...
I have had this TIVO-HD for about 11 months and 25 days so it figures....but...lol

I added a WD DVR extender to it when I bought it back 11 mos ago.

About 1 month ago I noticed that when tuned in and watching an HD channel with it, it would begin to skip and appear to drop frames. It would do this for a few minutes and within five minutes the image on the screen would freeze completely or go to a black screen. At this point if you attempt to do anything with the remote, like hit the TIVO button, the TIVO becomes very sluggish or unresponsive. Sometimes it seems to "break out" of this and get to the menu, sometimes it doesn't. Even if it does, if I go back to live TV it is still hung in that one spot of video it paused at or the black screen. The TIVO thinks it is still playing video but if I fast forward it just sits at the same screen. It seems like the only way to fix this is to change the channel and then change back. This seems to fix it for a few minutes.
Needless to say, I have done some troubleshooting of these problems. It doesnt appear to be a signal strength issue. Signal Strength hovers between 85 and 100 at all times. Signal to Noise Ratio sits between 30 to 35 at all times.
When this problem begins to occur the RS Corrected numbers begin to accumulate and VERY rarely RS Uncorrected number appear. RS Uncorrected is rare though. I have noticed that as long as the TIVO sits "Hung" like this the RS Corrected numbers continue to accumulate. I am using A CableCard from my cable company, Knology. It is a Scientific Atlanta MS card. I have swapped the Cable Card in the process of troubleshooting, but to no avail, the problem is still occuring. It has begin to occur with much more frequency. To the point that I almost cannot watch HD anymore.
I am fairly miffed that Tivo would require that I pay anything AT ALL for a replacement unit. To me that is simply not "standing behind your product."
I have upgraded drives in many Tivo's before though this would be my first TIVO-HD model. I guess I am looking for any input or insight any of you guys can offer. I really dont know what to do and my window for getting a discounted replacement unit from Tivo is closing soon.

Can any of you Tivo geniuses offer any insight to me?

    Thanks in advance guys.

Hard to know - that could actually be a CableCARD or cable company problem, as well as a TiVo hardware problem.

As for TiVo standing behind their product, like all companies, they have to draw the line on warranties, and it only makes sense to draw the line at the published date.

      didnt understand

      Michael,

I dont think you understand my problem with the warranty...
I dont think they DO stand behind their product and I'll elaborate....

Although I agree that you have to draw the line somewhere, I feel that during the effective life of a "warranty" a product should be repaired or replaced "FREE OF CHARGE". That is the issue here. If I still have a TIVO with a valid warranty, why in heck would I have to pay 149 or 79 for a replacement unit. That is not a warranty, they should call it a "defective product discount guarantee" or something ridiculous like that.

Warranty should mean they feel like their product will work without any problems for a specific time period and if problem,s DO occur they are willing to give you AT LEAST what you paid for...

Just my 2 cents about "drawing the line somewhere"

But isn't the warranty on labor only six months on your product?
