  • FIOS and Tivo for PVR?

    Hi:
Need some advice. I have a 1.25 TB, 4 GB, p4 3.2 GHz PC turned into a server using Windows Home Server running over a wired 10/100/1000 network. My ultimate plans were to also use it as a PVR with the ability to record onto DVD those shows I wanted to save (via transfer across my network). My Internet provider is Verizon FIOS as is my HD TV service, using the Motorola PVR with the 160 Gb hard drive. Originally, I was looking at using SageTV software with the Hauppage HD-DVR to record to the drive in the server. However I was informed from Sage I would also need a HD-200 Home Theater for playback as well as an IR Blaster. As you can imagine this has begun to add up to significant dollars. Also, it seems overly complex, and I could only record what I was watching. Also, my motherboard does not support PCI Express, one AGP slot only and I really don’t want to have to get a new motherboard.
I have been looking at the Tivo HD Series 3. Several people seem to have hooked this up the way I was interested in – either as a replacement for the Moto box or an add-on to it. I was planning to purchase the Tivo with the smallest available hard drive since it appears that Tivo has software that allows one to record to an external PC (in this case the server). I realize that I would need to obtain a cable card from Verizon (at some monthly cost) and I would lose the Video on Demand functionality. Is there other functionality I would lose?
So my question is this – if I purchase the Tivo series 3, could I (one getting the cable card) hook up the Tivo box and record to my server? Play back? Can I keep my FIOS box and somehow hook up to that (if so how?) Or, are there other alternatives? Is my processor okay for HD processing?
I don’t want to establish a separate PC as a media center (either running Windows or Linux [MythTV]) unless somebody can identify over-riding advantages to that.
Any other comments or suggestions would be welcome. I apologize for the length of this post, but I wanted to be as detailed as possible….
