  • How to find out modem problem SVR-2000

    Dudes and Betties,
How does one make sure that this old model TiVo SONY SVR-2000
modem is toast? The daily call is interrupted at different stages each
attempt. Methinks it is modem but the modem is internal and unit
has no serial port. Please help.

Your unit does have a serial port on the back, and modem problems are very common in your unit. The modem consists of a series of chips on the motherboard, making an external modem a very good option.

      SVR-2000 Modem

Thanks so much for the reply. I swear that I can't find any serial port on the back of this unit, ergo I wouldn't have a clue how to mount an external modem. I bought this SONY in 2002 when I was really sick. The only comms port is a phone line jack which I would think wires straight into the internal modem. The are other inputs and outputs for SVideo, cable, and split yellow, white, red.

Look at the IR port - it's round like a headphone jack. The serial is right above it. It isn't an RS-232 shaped plug, it's round like a headphone jack also. But it works, and it uses the stereo-to-serial cable here:

I stand completely, utterly, and embarrassingly corrected. Silly me - I didn't know that a serial port could be like a headphone jack, and if I hadn't held the unit upside down, I miight have read the label.

Important - If the serial port is activated then it will override the internal modem, right? I expect that you would not be selling these external modem units if it didn't. OK, I'll buy one and the cable, and maybe a hard drive upgrade to boot. What hard drive do ya recommend?

Right. You tell the TiVo to only use the external modem via the remote. We include directions for that in the kit.

We like the 160 GB and larger drives, so, for that model, I guess the 160s. Those are Seagate DB 35 models.
