  • DirecTV HR10-250 for Standard Def?

I have had DirecTV for 7 years now. I have two DirecTV Tivo units (Hughes HDVR2 and Sony SAT-T60) and absolutely love them. Recently the SAT-T60 died (stays on "Welcome, powering up........." screen forever, assuming my hard drive is kaput) and I am trying to decide what to do.

I haven't made the switch to DirecTV HD yet (original plan was to do it the first part of 2009), I am planning on making the switch after the NEW HD DirecTV Tivo's are introduced which should be the second half of next year. Since I have less than a year left before the HD switchover, I don't really want to spend a lot of money repairing my receiver. I started looking around for used standard def DirecTV Tivo units to buy for cheap to hold me until I switched to HD.

But then I got to thinking, could I buy the HD Tivo receiver (HR10) and use it just as a SD receiver? Right now I have the 2 outputs from my dual LNB dish going to a Spaun multiswitch. Couldn't I connect both inputs on the HR 10 to outputs from my multiswitch and then just watch SD content?

A used HR10 is about the same price as used SD unit, but it has a much bigger hard drive on it. Normally the HR10 has a 250GB hard drive, most SD units have a 40GB or 80GB hard drive. You can find upgraded SD units, but they are quite expensive.

    Thanks

That all works and makes good sense, but you might be better off just getting a replacement drive for the SAT T-60. You won't have to worry about any DirecTV lease issues, and if you know your unit works well otherwise, that's a better bet than an unknown from eBay.

Replacement SAT T-60 drives are here:

Lease issues? I own all my DirecTV equipment, but I do know that DirecTV went to some sort of "lease" arrangement for equipment some time ago. Can someone sell me a leased unit?

My plan was to get the serial number(s) for units I was interested in and check them out with DirecTV before I bought one.

I like the idea of just replacing the hard drive in my SAT-T60, but even the cheapest replacement drive (the 80GB) is $89. There are several HR10-250's on eBay for ~$100, and they would have 3x the storage.

I am not ruling out replacing the hard drive on the SAT-T60, but right now I am trying to figure out the "gotcha's" of buying a HR10-250 off eBay. I realize the biggest problem is that I buy one off eBay and two weeks later it kicks the bucket.

      Thanks,

When you activate any new unit with DirecTV, they'll consider it to be leased. Then, it can't be activated on any other account.

Likewise, if the unit you're receiving was on a leased account, you won't be able to activate it. We hear of this all the time with eBay and Craigslist sales.

One final note - if you activate an HR10, DirecTV will add the HD service to your account.
