  • Series 3 suddenly really slow (and occasionally rebooting)

So I bought a series 3 the day they came out a couple of years ago, haven't had a problem until a couple of months ago. I added a 1TB drive as well some time ago and have about 120 HD recordings so yes it is very full of stuff. But no that is not when it started happening, it just kinda started on its own.

    1. The menu is really slow, for instance going back to the now playing can take up to 2-3 minutes before all programs appear.
    2. Occasionally just clicking the remote might take 30-60 to respond. It does always end up working again
    4. Once or twice I have seen it spontaneously reboot although it never happens when I watch something, I know it happens though because my program will be split. It has never hung up though.
    5. Almost every HD program will now have a couple of segments where it freezes or pixelates for a couple of seconds.

From reading the forums I might conclude my main hardrive is going bad, but I am not completely convinced. I have also read some posts where Tivo acknowledges it might be a software issue.

    Does anyone have similar problems?

    1. Did a new hardrive fix it
    2. Can I replace the main hardrive and still keep all my programming on the 1TB external (if I send to weakness maybe)
    3. Could something else be going on

Any insight would be appreciated as it is very annoying and I don't really want to lose all my programming.

    Thanks,

    Mike.

Yup - those all sound like drive problems. The big question is: which drive? It could even be both.

We can try to copy your data from these drives to new ones. But if there is data corruption due to failing drives, that isn't always possible.

If only one drive is failing, we can try to make a copy of it and use it with the external.

I just ordered a new main drive (a big bigger than before). If that solves it can I still add the external 1TB later. i.e. see if problems go away and disk check the external and if ok re-attach. Do i need to reformat as ofcourse the existing content would be gone from the external.

There is no way to transfer season pass is there?

To add an external to an already-expanded internal drive, is something we'd have to do here, FYI.

We can transfer Season Passes, but if you're having problems, we really don't recommend it - they would come as part of a complete settings transfer.

We would need the internal and external drives...although we'd recommend that you send the TiVo as well so that we can verify once we're done with the work.

              Same problem

I've the series 3 since it came out, and I just started having the exact same problem within the last few weeks. I'm guessing it was some junky update that "improved" my Tivo with. Now it doesn't work. Not happy.

If we are marrying two drives, we really need just the two drives....but if we have the unit, we can put them in and test them to be sure all is fine. So long as the external is good, having the drives should be sufficient, but we like to boot drives before shipping them back. So: Not required, but recommended.
